• President's Report
  • Welcome to October, everyone! September was quieter than August and we are now changing gears from summer into fall and many of our members have family who are returning to academia in one form or another. It's a season full of promise about what can be. To our teachers, I wish you and your students a fantastic year of discovery. To all my members here at Quelab, I hope this time inspires you to continue on your journey of learning and discovery. Just please, I beg of you, don't blow the place up! Or, if you do, put it back as you found it when you're done.
  • This month brings us some new members. I'd like to personally welcome: Margaret, Bill, Joseph, Jennifer, Jeremy, Nicholas, Sean, Anita, David M., Maureen, Sergio, Karen, Brandon,Jessica, Steve, and David F.M.. It's exciting that you've found our wonderful community!
  • Earlier this month we at Quelab were quite honored to by the Albuquerque Community Foundation [[http://www.albuquerquefoundation.org/ to be included as a stop in their “Trolley Tour”. The Foundation uses these “Trolly Tours” to gather donors and community leaders together to visit nonprofits in Albuquerque giving these folks an opportunity to know about different organizations in Albuquerque, as well as to allow these organizations a platform to share their background. My heartfelt thanks to Heath, Darren and Gonner for being at Quelab for this event. These guys represented you with enthusiasm and professionalism. Darren even put together packets for the attendees to take home that had literature on some of our programs and how to get in touch with us. I believe we are going to find a way to expand on this idea.
  • I'd like to remind everyone that next Wed is the Board meeting. It is open to the membership to watch. Even if you don't go send these guys some good thoughts. They are working hard to keep Quelab moving forward.
  • Also, Monday is our Space Cadets meeting at 7pm at Quelab. We are working on building this group up again to plan usage of the facility. Quelab has grown and sometimes it's good to have lots of help to figure out how to accommodate everyone.
• Treasurer's report
  • We still have money- $10k after paying this month’s rent
  • His official tenure ends this month (officers are appointed annually through October), though he will be helping through tax season
  • No out of line costs, expenses staying in line with estimates, classes helped keep us afloat.
• Business Development Officer: position currently vacant
• Education: Darrel Knutson
  • We have ongoing basic and teen woodworking classes on Saturday and Monday nights. A total of 5 adults and one teen. We also have a welding class with 2 students which started yesterday. We hope to get a couple of the students who were unable to finish last month’s class to rejoin and complete the class. I am still looking for good ways to advertise these and other classes.
  • I have been unable to contact Johnny Romero about the Design class (Inkscape use for feeding the lasercutter). I hope to have that class sometime soon.

  • As of Friday, we have 99 active members, of which 11 are students and 9 associates.

  • Not a lot to report on this month, but this is not to say that nothing was going on.
  • Through a posting of an ad on Craigslist offering various things for free, I met our new neighbors to the NW. They were clearing out and giving things away that the previous tenant had left behind when they closed / moved their cabinet making operations. As a result, we now have a medium sized conference room table in room 1 (Need some help in flipping it over and putting it in its final resting place.). We also have some countertops that were previously mounted to the wall (similar to the benches in the Electronics Lab). Am going to propose a use at the upcoming Space Cadets meeting. Also obtained were some short drawer cabinet units that I thought only to retrieve the nice slides. However, JT saw them in a different light, which was having them under the blue / white workstations in the Annex to provide storage.
  • As it turns out, the brothers who purchased the building both have been to Quelab and were very aware and favorably impressed with us and what we do. This is a great thing, as they have a nice 60 gallon air compressor and tank in the building that they are not sure is going to be used. I have initiated negotiations with them to acquire this, and being we are a 501©3 organization, this is swaying their decision towards a possible flat out donation. Right now the ball is in their court, and I’m waiting for them to decide what they want to do.
  • As a result of an ad on Craigslist, I got to meet a husband and wife from Edgewood who were interested in purchasing 2 Anthro carts. The ad mentioned Quelab, and not knowing what it was, before meeting me, they checked out our website and when we met up, they were VERY enthusiastic about our space and what we do. They were given a tour, and they soaked it all on visually, and at the end, they announced that they felt they had many things that might be of interested to donate to the space, some of which include licensed Windows 7 PCs! He currently does IT work for the Post Office (based at main P.O. on Broadway) for NM, AZ, UT and CO I believe he said. He is an EE who formerly worked for Texas Instruments. He has a passion for electronics, and thinks he will be able to help the Electronics Lab with some additional equipment. They are currently in the beginning stages of building a large barn / workshop, so it may be a little while until we see more develop from them. As a result of their visit, $45 is going to Quelab for Anthro Cart sales.
  • Finally, in preparation for the tour by the Albuquerque Community Foundation, JT was a huge and instrumental help in getting the first blue / white workstation righted and finished being assembled.
  • In closing, I am putting out a call for anybody to assist for 15-20 minutes after the meeting to help move some of the boxes of items left over from MMF Take-A-Part(y) back upstairs to the mezzanine off the Core. I have health issues that make moving this up the stairs difficult for me, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Please keep the area clean, and if there are components out of stock, feel free to order some replacements
• Facilities: John Murray
  • With Drew's assistance and technical expertise, replaced the non-functional rechargeable battery in the emergency exit/light above the south exit door in the annex.
  • Replaced the non-functional “dial-in-a-number” padlock for the shop overhead door, with a different model lock, per a request from Dennis Maloney. Wrote and posted a brief instruction sheet, in case of other foreseen and unforeseen difficulties with the lock/sliding bolt mechanism. Purchased an identical spare lock which is in the office.
  • Scheduled the installation of an additional fire suppression sprinkler in the annex, per the Fire Marshall's inspection report. Western States Fire Protection has tentatively scheduled the installation for October 6/7 and I will escort them on those days. Otherwise, other members have volunteered to escort them.
  • Recontacted the Albuquerque Fire Marshall's office for a re-inspection of the corrective measures performed in the facility, and will recontact them if a return call is not received before October 3.

  • Julie & She are planning another dye workshop, maybe with a halloween flavor to it

  • An IP Cam of the type that Adric has informed me can be connected without any problems with our network has been purchased to be used to monitor the metal shop. The purchase has been made from personal funds. No Quelab reimbursement is requested.
